Description
This drill simulates a strong deny play on the wing position. The offensive player brings his defender towards the basket with a hlaf speed movement. Then they sprint with a very fast movement back to their starting position. The player receives a pass and now he decides to shoot straight away (Picture 1), penetrate directly to the basket (Picture 2), fake a shot and go for a one dribble jump shot towards the baseline (Picture 3) or fake a shot and go for a one dribble jump shot towards the free throw line (Picture 4).
Goals / purpose / skills
Fundamental exercise to get open and receive the ball under strong defensive pressure.
Variations
If the player performs the exercise correctly, he should practice the movement against a defender. At the beginning the defender should work only at half speed.
Tips / Hints / Emphasis
The first cut towards the basket should be performed at half speed.
The offensive player should always be prepared for a backdoor pass in case the defender is playing too high. The second cut has to be very fast. Emphasise correct footwork technique, timing and speed.
In Pictures 2,3 and 4 the player should fake every time after he receives the ball and before he dribbles the ball.
